Catching Mon

Wild Mon roam the fields and dungeons. Defeat one and a catch window opens for you, the trainer who landed the final hit. Choose a ball, throw it, and see if it holds.

  1. Defeat a wild Mon. The catch window opens with the balls you are carrying.
  2. Pick a ball. It is only used up when you actually throw it.
  3. If it breaks free, you can throw again or let it go.
  4. A successful catch goes straight into your inventory as an item, and the species is registered in your Pokedex.

Every catchable species belongs to one of three catch tiers. The chance is per throw.

Poke Ball15%10%3%
Great Ball30%20%15%
Ultra Ball50%40%25%
Master Ball100%100%100%

Tier 1 holds the most common species. Tier 3 holds the hardest to catch, including many that never evolve. When a tiered Mon is found, the map is told about it, so keep an eye on the announcements.

No two catches are exactly alike. Each new companion rolls:

  • Three IVs from 1 to 15: one for attack, one for HP and one for defense.
  • An attack speed.
  • A shiny chance of 1 in 50. Shinies get a bonus to all three IVs.

See Stats and IVs for what these numbers do in battle.

Legendaries do not follow the table above. They have their own catch rules, Ultra Ball limits and Master Ball odds. See Wild legendaries and Mythic raids.
